How the Liver Detoxifies Oestrogen and Its Impact on Women’s Health

Are you experiencing symptoms like PMS, endometriosis, PMDD, fibroids, or thyroid problems? It could be due to how your liver is detoxifying oestrogen.

The liver plays a crucial role in detoxifying hormones, including oestrogen. When oestrogen levels in the body are high, the liver works to break down and eliminate the excess hormone. This process involves two main pathways: the primary pathway, which converts oestrogen into less potent forms, and the secondary pathway, which converts oestrogen into harmful metabolites that must be further processed for elimination. What Happens When the Liver Doesn’t Detoxify Oestrogen Properly? If the liver is unable to effectively detoxify oestrogen, the hormone can accumulate in the body, leading to a variety of health issues. High levels of oestrogen have been linked to conditions such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), endometriosis, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), fibroids, and thyroid problems.

PMS and Oestrogen Imbalance: PMS is a common condition that affects many women before their menstrual cycle. Symptoms can include mood swings, bloating, fatigue, and irritability. Oestrogen imbalance has been shown to play a role in the development of PMS, and inadequate liver detoxification of oestrogen can exacerbate these symptoms.

Endometriosis and Oestrogen: Endometriosis is a painful condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. High levels of oestrogen have been associated with the development and progression of endometriosis. If the liver is not able to adequately detoxify oestrogen, it can contribute to the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.

PMDD and Oestrogen Dominance: PMDD is a severe form of PMS that can significantly impact a woman's quality of life. Oestrogen dominance, which occurs when there is an imbalance between oestrogen and progesterone levels, has been linked to the development of PMDD. Proper liver detoxification of oestrogen is essential for maintaining hormonal balance and reducing the severity of PMDD symptoms.

Fibroids and Oestrogen Metabolism: Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus and can cause heavy periods, pelvic pain, and other symptoms. Oestrogen is known to stimulate the growth of fibroids, and impaired liver detoxification of oestrogen can contribute to their formation. Proper oestrogen metabolism is crucial for preventing the development and growth of fibroids.

Thyroid Problems and Oestrogen Detoxification: Thyroid problems, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, can be influenced by oestrogen levels in the body. Oestrogen has been shown to interfere with thyroid hormone production and function, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and mood changes. Ensuring that oestrogen is properly detoxified by the liver can help support thyroid health and function.
